Turn Watch Later into a list you use

I find most videos on the home screen or in the recommendations next to a video, and I save them to Watch Later. It is also the first place I go when I open YouTube. Mine holds hundreds of videos and I have never cleaned it, because I cannot filter by topic or tell what I already watched.

Watch Later became the inbox of YouTube

Many videos are discovered in the home feed or in the recommendations next to a video, and Watch Later is the one-tap place to keep them. For a lot of people it is also the first stop when they open the app.

But the list only grows. There is no filter by category, sorting stops at basics like newest added, and the only watched action removes videos for good. Finding something that fits the time you have means scrolling through hundreds. Saving works, using the list does not.

WHY NOW

The data exists, the tools are ready, and Premium needs reasons.

Categories already exist YouTube tags every video with a category, so the filters need no new metadata and little effort.
AI can preview a video Summaries and fit-for-my-time picks are now cheap enough to run on videos people saved.
Premium has to earn its price Prices are rising, so features that make daily use better help keep subscribers.

04 · Why it's not solved yet
Business objectives A growing list does not hurt watch time on the surface, so a messy Watch Later is probably not measured as a problem.
Technology Categories exist per video, but a hide view, richer sorting, search and summaries at list level are new work.
Organisation Likely a playlist feature owned apart from recommendations and Premium, so nobody owns the whole experience.
05 · Options & Trade-offs

SIZE (ASSUMPTIONS)

A rough chain from YouTube's logged-in users to extra Premium subscribers. Only the user base (about 2.7B, third-party estimate) is sourced; every other factor is my assumption and needs validation. These features alone are no reason to subscribe. They are an extra that raises the value of Premium, so the last step counts only people for whom it tips the decision. At about €150 a year (German individual plan, €149.99), 0.8M subscribers would be roughly €120M in annual revenue, before overlap with existing subscribers.
