Turn travel videos into a Maps list

We recently moved to Munich and watched countless videos on sights and restaurants, but keeping track of it all was hard. On our latest trip to New York, we found most ideas on Instagram and TikTok, yet during the trip itself, we only navigated with Maps. This feature would have helped us enormously.

Discovery moved to (short form) video

Travel inspiration now comes from short videos and creators on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, not from Maps.

Every place still means pausing, searching, matching and saving by hand, and the reason it was recommended gets lost. Nothing carries over from Shorts, YouTube, Instagram or TikTok into Google Maps.

WHY NOW

The technology is ready, and the window is closing.

AI can finally read a video Gemini understands speech, on-screen text and frames together, with per-second timestamps.
Competitors are moving Instagram and TikTok are building their own local maps and place feeds.
Google has already started Maps saves places from screenshots. Video is the next, richer step.

PRIMARY
SIZE (ASSUMPTIONS)

A rough chain of assumptions, from YouTube's user base to places people actually go. It lands at about 34M navigations per month. Every time someone starts navigation to a saved place counts, including repeat trips to the same place, not only first visits. So it is the total number of trips, not the number of new places discovered. Every factor still needs validation. For Google, each of these is a trip with local intent: the exact moment that local ads and Business Profiles monetise. Today that intent starts on TikTok and Instagram and never reaches Maps.

Cost: low Cost scales with unique videos, not with views. Each video is analysed once and cached for every viewer.

OPEN QUESTIONS
Who owns it: YouTube or Maps?
Can creators opt out their videos?
What happens to places that have closed? Older videos often point to places that no longer exist.
Analyse every video upfront, or only when someone taps Save? A trade-off between cost and waiting time.
